Totnes Development Trust is seeking to manage the redevelopment of part of the former Dairy Crest site, next to the railway station. The project takes its name from the South Devon Atmospheric Railway, built by Isambard Brunel.
In 2008, the Totnes community was successful in its campaign to preserve the pumping house as a scheduled monument. It is this Brunel building, together with the area around it, which is the focus of the present funding application.
BRUNEL BUILDING PROJECT PROPOSAL The scheme covers:
- Site acquisition and planning consent
- Refurbishment of the Brunel building
- Construction of a new modular building attached to the Brunel building, to contain business incubation office accommodation.
The land and buildings will be developed to the highest environmental standards for a commercial development.
PARTNERS Dairy Crest, the owners of the site, have committed themselves to the Brunel building being a Community Asset, and have indicated their preference for a tripartite approach to include an established developer. Totnes Development Trust is working with Transition Town Totnes, local architects LED and is also in discussion with Riverford Farm and Duchy College.
FUNDING Social Investment Bank have agreed to fund £75k for a feasibility study to prepare a plan for the Dairy Crest site and 25 days additional consultancy support.
