Trustees

In 2003, TDT brought together all the local museums and societies concerned with heritage to form the Totnes Heritage Group, which it still finances and administers. The group was set up to tackle Heritage issues on a coordinated basis and ensure that each group was aware of other Heritage activities taking place in Totnes.

Totnes Ceilings

The Totnes Heritage Group's booklet on the wonderful Ceilings to be found in and around Totnes is currently on sale at several local venues for £3. It covers a number of beautifully photographed ceilings including some in Totnes High Street and Fore Street, the unique Jesse treeceiling in Dartmouth and the ceilings inside Old Forde House in Newton Abbot.

Reeve's Timber Yard

TDT also assisted in the Heritage Group's publication of a book about the history of the Reeves Timber Yard, once one of the Town's major employers.

Current project

The recent fire above the Save the Children shop in Totnes Fore Street, and resulting loss of a historically valuable moulded ceiling, inspired the Heritage Group to make moves to organise a workshop for historic building owners/occupiers with the intention of highlighting the importance of the town’s heritage and providing information and practical advice on historic features, conservation and reduction of risk from fire etc. Leaflets were sent out to the tenants and owners of the listed buildings in Totnes to assess the potential interest in such a workshop. However, as the response was not high enough to cover the costs of the workshop taking place, the following project has been formulated:

Aim
To provide a snapshot record of historically-important, privately-owned buildings in Totnes with descriptive notes of style, building materials, features and condition.

In order to achieve this, a record template has been designed and will show:

  • Building Characteristics
  • Photos
  • State of repair
  • Importance

Purpose:
1.   To help owners/tenants/users of the building to care for and maintain the historic
      fabric of the building and to better its historical significance;

2.   To provide a public record as a resource for the people of Totnes, to be held at the       Study Centre of Totnes Museum.  This record will be an easily accessible
document that can be used as a starting point for further research, investigation or       conservation measures.

Plan:
Initially take 10 buildings as a sample and compile all available information, preferably with co-operation and consent of the owner/tenant.
