Leechwell Garden

Rotherfold Project

In the 1980’s, South Hams District Council acquired land in the Southern Area of Totnes, which had been a market garden. Having built a link road and car parks, SHDC drew up several plans for the further development of the site. The 2003 plan was opposed by a local community group (Save Our Space – later Design Our Space), with the result that a concept design for the area was agreed following lengthy community consultation by Design Our Space, including the creation of a new public open space, Leechwell Garden. Leechwell Garden is on the site of an ancient orchard, and contains a scheduled immersion pool, fed by water from the Leechwell. DOS drew up a design for the new Garden with landscape architect, Charlotte Rathbone. Totnes Development Trust became involved in the project in 2009, to provide financial and project management support to the Leechwell Garden Association which was set up to deliver the project.

Funding for the infrastructure of the Garden was provided by S106 money from the developers, Midas, and from SHDC. TDT applied for and was granted a £50,000 grant from Community Spaces to provide the elements in the Garden that the community had asked for during the consultation process, including a herb garden, pergola, benches, plantings, play structure and public art. The project has been brought in on time and under budget, and the successful launch event in October 2010 was attended by over 300 people.

The current joint project between Totnes Development Trust and the Leechwell Garden Association is the restoration of and newly designed setting for the immersion pool.
