WHAT IS PROJECT MANAGEMENT?

Project management bridges the gap between ideas and action. It is about problem-solving and decision-making, to make things happen. Some of the activities involved in project management and delivery can be found here.

PROJECT STAGES

There are four main stages of a project, all essential to its success. . Each stage requires different skills. Totnes has many strong community groups, with very creative and imaginative ideas, but sometimes they need support to help turn ideas into reality. Totnes Development Trust set out to meet this need, using its business and professional skills to manage, implement and deliver projects in on time and in budget, for the benefit of the community.

TDT’s recent focus has been on meeting the need for high quality public open spaces in the centre of town, identified as falling well below national standards by Design Our Space community group.

PARTNERS

Partners in project management have the authority to commit resources to the project, and have the organisational structure to take on financial, legal, contractual responsibilities and/or liabilities. For example, the Totnes Healthy Futures partners with TDT are Leatside Surgery, University of Plymouth and South Hams District Council. The Lamb is the project information/ demonstration hub – a small site, complicated by being both a project site, and a public open space with a Grade II listed building.

COMMUNAL AND PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT

By taking the lead role in project management, TDT trustees work with community groups to develop the skills required to deliver their project, and to create teams whose members work individually and together. A key stage in project development is making best use of the practical skills of volunteers to finish specific tasks and maintain the project sites for the future.
